The Momentum Programme

The Momentum Programme provides access to expert advice, connections and access to investment channels through a growing number of regionally based student-led investment committees. It is a national commercialisation programme, that leads to the establishment and use of best practice to deliver new technologies to market from student populations, universities, research institutions, and private companies.

The Momentum investment committees have a focus on start-up ventures, particularly those originating from tertiary student and staff owned intellectual property and technologies. Our services include connecting technology and project teams with strategic management, top-tier advice and efficient access to capital.

Momentum is a partner in the government's Commercialisation Partner Network, a programme designed to increase commercial outcomes from publicly funded research. Momentum provides facilitated access to commercialisation resources, networks and expertise to directly increase the quantum and quality of commercial opportunities arising in New Zealand.

The Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment has accredited the Momentum Programme investment committees to make formal investment decisions for the PreSeed Accelerator Fund.

The investment committees are formed with an experienced chair, tertiary students, and some longitudinally experienced investors and entrepreneurs. Each Momentum investment committee has a majority of student members. Investment committee members have highly diverse backgrounds, academic fields, and perspectives that they bring to bear when providing advice to presenting project teams. This allows the committees to provide advice and support to a wide range of start up technologies.

Presenting project teams are comprised of students and staff of either tertiary education institutes or Crown Research Institutes and are able to access these investment committees without charge. Private companies are also able to utilise the expertise of the Momentum Investment Committees for a nominal fee.
